Things to do for kids this February

Here’s a round up of some fun activities to do on your UK staycation in this month.

Kew Orchid Festival

When : Feb 4 – March 5 2017

Kew’s annual orchid festival has an Indian theme this year, with colourful blooms hanging everywhere and sculptures of elephants and peacocks created from tropical plants. We went last year and I loved it. Kew is a wonderful place to visit all year round. There is so much of the 300 acre site that I have yet to discover. I can’t wait to go back.

Price : Free with Kew admission which costs £14 approx for an adult and £2.50 for a child (check website for more details), Members go free.

Location : Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 3AB

Bekonscot Model Village and Railway.

When : Opens Feb 11, 2017.

Toddler Kitty at Bekonscot

Bekonscot is a magical day out for kids aged 1 to 100. It’s like being Gulliver in Lilliput in a 1930s time wrap, surrounded by miniature railways and houses. There’s mini London zoo, a funfair and a marina. It opened in 1929 and the Queen visited as a child. It is classic innocent childish fun.

Prices : Kids 2-15 £6, Adults £10. See website for more details.

Location: Warwick Road, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire HP9 2PL

Puddle Jumping Championships.

When : Feb 18-26 2017; 2pm daily.

Puddle Jumping Championships are taking place across the UK, so grab your wellies and head to your nearest WWT reserve and impersonate a duck or a certain Piggy and jump up and down in muddy puddles.

Prices: Child £4.29; Adult £8.51; Family £23.09

Location : WWT’s website above has all the details.

19th Century Mini Archaeologists at Hadrian’s Wall

When: Feb 18-26, 2017

This sounds like great fun. The kids get to join ‘Victorian archaeologists’ at Hadrian’s Wall and discover Roman artifacts, then guess their purpose.

Location : Hadrian’s Wall, Chollerford, NE46 4EU

Butler School, Belsay Hall and Gardens, Northumberland

When : Feb 18-26, 2017

‘You rang m’lud ?’ If you fancy encouraging your children’s household skills  why not enroll them in ‘Butler School’ this half term. They will learn the etiquette of running a country house, including napkin folding and table dressing…..they might even practice their new techniques at home and start laying the table… for a night or two anyway…

Prices: Child £5.20; Adult £8.80; Family £22.80; free for English Heritage members.

Location :  Belsay Hall NE20 0DX

The Twits at Liverpool Playhouse

This was one of my favourite books as a child. Now Roald Dahl’s disgusting couple take to the stage and are meaner than ever before (probably).  Suitable for kids 6+.

The Eden Project is a brilliant day out any time of year, but this month older children can help to rescue an alien in this unusual take on an ‘escape room’. You have to work as a team to solve the clues to discover a cure for the poorly alien and earn your escape from the quarantine chamber.

Price : between £15-20 each depending on the number in your team.

Location : Eden Project, Bodelva, Cornwall PL24 2SG

If you do try any of these activities this month, I would love to hear from you. I am looking forward to reading your stories and tips. Have fun !
